The site presently occupied by "The Kitchen" has seen
a number of changes during the last seventy years. During the Second
World War the airfield, that used to be behind the current buildings
to the west was known as Coleby Grange and was an overflow field
for RAP Cranwell. In the later stages of the war Mosquitoes used
to fly from Coleby flown by Canadian and Polish pilots.
After the war ended the site was used as a base
for Blue Streak missiles for a few years until I think the sixties.
There is still a structure in the field concerning the buildings
used by the RAF for the storage of the missiles.
There has been a Café on the site since the late
forties. In the early days it was based in the current kitchen facility.
A prefab hut was added later and updated in 1985 when a bungalow
was built on the site by the then owners.
The café, on the border of a number of local villages
was naturally known as "The Boundary Café". This was the case until
the café was bought by the current owners who changed the name to
"Nocton Heath Truckstop"
David and Hazel Mather bought the Boundary Café
in August 2001 after a period of declining business. It was felt
that a change of name was appropriate as the café, under the previous
management had gained a reputation of providing poor quality food
and service. It was felt that a new start and new name was needed
to help the business build a new reputation.
A new menu was introduced with a reliance on the
use of fresh local produce. Diners started to return to enjoy the
new meals and the business started to gain a reputation for providing
good quality home made food.
In September 2003 a hot food carvery was introduced
following requests from diners. This became an instant success.
Up to the time of the introduction of the carvery David and Hazel
were going to refurbish the premises and increase seating from 45
up to 50. It was decided in November 2004 that the anticipated increase
to 50 would not cater for the existing demand. Therefore seating
capacity was doubled to 90 with a further 60 seats outside for use
during the summer months.
In the early spring of 2005 it was felt that another
change of name would reflect the type of food for which the café
was becoming well known. Therefore in April 2005 "The Kitchen" was
born.
David and Hazel enjoy providing very good quality
traditional British food. They hope you enjoy eating it.
